Working with Custody Evaluators

Working with Florida Child Custody Evaluators

Preparing for a Parenting Evaluation

One of the most difficult aspects of divorce is how to provide care for your children. Which parent should be the parent who has more timesharing with the children and provides more for the child's day-to-day needs? Can you work together to share joint custody and decision-making for the best interests of the children? Are your children comfortable with large changes in their life or would they be more comfortable spending most of their time in one family home?

At Lewert Law Offices, P.A. in Boca Raton, Florida, we represent clients going through divorce and advocate the best interests of their children.

We invite you to contact us by phone at 561-948-3419 or schedule an appointment via e-mail. Free initial telephone consultations with attorney Tina L. Lewert are also available.

Preparing for a Parenting Evaluation

When you begin divorce proceedings, you will meet with lawyer Tina L. Lewert to discuss your rights to child custody. If you and your spouse cannot agree on custody arrangements, the court may order a custody evaluator, Guardian ad Litem, or Parenting Coordinator, which both parties will typically pay for.

A neutral custody evaluator is agreed upon by you and your spouse to help determine what is best for your children. Custody evaluators and Guardians ad Litem typically meet with each parent separately a number of times, as well as each child.

What Is the Custody Evaluator Looking For?

Custody evaluators are looking at the quality of your relationship with each child, including:

  • Bonding
  • Your ability to get along with your spouse
  • Parenting skills
  • Signs of drug or alcohol abuse
  • The psychological and physical health of each child

Trust Your Attorney

Nothing you tell the custody evaluator or Guardian ad Litem is confidential, but everything you tell attorney Tina L. Lewert is. Her goal is to answer all your questions about divorce and custody arrangements, so you have the information you need to make informed decisions.

Once the interviews are finished, the evaluator may meet with the children's pediatrician, teachers or daycare providers to help determine each parent's parenting skills and level of involvement.

The evaluator will report his or her findings to the court, including recommendations for custody, timesharing, and a parenting plan.
